Earth Charter® Day – Thu, June 29, 2017 at DUDOC
The Art Party promotes Earth Charter® and Golden Brush Art events for this year’s Earth Charter Day on Thursday, June 29, 2017. The Art Party is an endorser of Earth Charter® for a just, sustainable, and peaceful planet and participated in the annual Earth Charter Day 2016 at Dudoc Vancouver, an Earth Charter® partner.
The idea of the Earth Charter started in 1987, by Maurice Strong and Mikhail Gorbachev as members of The Club of Rome, when the United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development called for a new charter to guide the transition to sustainable development. In 1994, Maurice Strong (Chairman of the Earth Summit) and Mikhail Gorbachev restarted the Earth Charter as a civil society initiative, with the help of the government of the Netherlands.
Dudoc is located at the former Buschlen Mowatt Gallery space on Georgia Street and is conscious of carrying on the legacy of excellence in showcasing emerging talent. The vision for Dudoc is to become a centre for the exchange of ideas and collaboration between designers and developers to create a new vision of vitality for the metropolitan Vancouver area.
Dudoc is the brainchild of Walas Concepts, a Dutch Canadian urban design company that specializes in revitalizing neighbourhoods by taking into account the existing essence of the area, enhancing the creative core and listening to the locals. Walas is known for fostering the creative class and growing the local economic by encouraging micro-businesses. Walas Concepts brought the concept of Dudoc forward to the Consul-General of the Netherlands, who has collaborated to make it a reality.
“I’ve been working in both countries for several years as an urban designer and I’ve always been struck by the compatibility in culture and sensibility,” states Gerben van Straaten, CEO of Walas Concepts. “Netherlands has been a hotbed of sustainable innovation for a number of years and Canada is a country open to new ideas and eager to exchange and implement ideas around green design.”

The Art Party is an Endorser of the United Nations Earth Charter®
The mission of the Earth Charter Initiative is to promote the transition to sustainable ways of living and a global society founded on a shared ethical framework that includes respect and care for the community of life, ecological integrity, universal human rights, respect for diversity, economic justice, democracy, and a culture of peace.
Since 2010, The Art Party has supported a sustainable local economy. Local businesses enhance our community, connect and support us socially, enhance wealth and employment to establish local economies that are economically viable, environmentally sound and socially responsible.
The Art Party started as a Facebook Group in 2010 to promote the Main Art Drift, an annual event of local small businesses supporting local artists along Main Street, Vancouver. Today, The Art Party is a social innovation club located at 837 E. Broadway in East Vancouver that promotes Buy Local to Support Local Artists to +10,000 contacts on social media. The Art Party’s buy local post was shared 615 times and liked 64 times on The Art Party Facebook network. This inspired the tagline:
“Buy Local to Support Local Artists”
The Art Party will leverage its +10,000 social media contacts to disseminate the Earth Charter and raise awareness in our local community. The Art Party will collaborate with Earth Charter Partners, Affiliates and with other organizations that have endorsed the Earth Charter in our region.
As an arts-based social club, The Art Party intends to inspire its members to spread the sustainability vision articulated in the Earth Charter through visual art exhibitions to educate the general public throughout Metro Vancouver, Canada starting in 2016.
